취리히 2023년 11월 8일 /PRNewswire/ -- 글로벌 교육 기업인 EF(Education First)[https://www.ef.co.kr/ ]는 최근 성인의 영어 실력을 조사하는 'EF 영어 능력지수[https://www.ef.co.kr/epi/ ](EF EPI) 2023'을 발표했다. 해당 보고서에 따르면 전 세계 청년들의 영어 능력이 지난 5년 동안 급격히 감소했으며, 성별 간의 영어 실력 격차가 커지는 추세로 나타났다.

2023 EF EPI는 113개 국가 및 지역의 220만 비영어권 성인을 대상으로 진행된 EF SET 시험 점수를 기반으로 조사한 결과, 지난 5년 동안 청년들의 영어 실력이 우려될 정도로 급격히 감소했으며, 성별 간의 영어 실력 격차가 커지고 있다는 것으로 나타났다.

EF EPI의 저자 케이트 벨(Kate Bell)은 "높은 영어 능력 수준인 상위 국가들은 더욱 상승세를 보였으나, 반대로 영어 능력이 저조한 하위 국가들은 더욱 하락했다."라고 밝혔다. "언어는 서로의 관점을 공유하고 서로를 이해하기 위한 필수적인 요소일 뿐 아니라, 영어는 세계적인 언어로서 의사 소통을 가능하게 하는 역할과 다른 나라와 사람들을 연결하고 이어주는데 도움을 주고 있습니다. 우리는 이번 해 처음으로 영어 능력지수의 트렌드에 대해서 조사하였고, 앞으로도 지속적으로 영어능력지수 트렌드에 대해서 조사 분석을 할 계획이다."라고 전했다.

보고서에 따르면 2015년부터 현재까지 18~20세 청년들의 영어 능력이 크게 하락했다고 밝혔다. 특히 이 연령대의 영어 능력은 무려 89점이나 감소했다.

그러나 팬데믹이 큰 영향을 미친 사이, 전 세계적으로 노동 생산성이 긍정적인 변화를 보였다. 2020년부터 2021년까지의 데이터를 보면 30세 이상의 성인을 대상으로 노동 생산성이 20점 상승한 것으로 나타났다.

성별에 따른 영어 능력 격차도 두드러진 결과로 나타났다. 남성의 영어 능력은 2014년 이후 14점 상승하는 반면, 여성의 영어 능력은 19점이나 하락했다.

지역별로는 동아시아가 4년 연속 영어 능력 지수 하락세를 보였다. 그러나 일본과 중국은 이러한 추세와 달리 영어 능력이 상승했다. 라틴아메리카는 영어 능력의 향상을 지속적으로 보였지만, 멕시코는 하락세를, 브라질은 더딘 상승세를 보였다. 유럽은 이번 연도에는 변동 없이 수평적인 결과를 기록했고, 아프리카의 대부분 국가는 안정적인 영어 능력 경향을 보였다.

Worldwide English Proficiency Index Reveals Growing Gender Gap Trend, Declining English Skills Among Young Adults

ZURICH Nov. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- EF Education First [https://www.ef.co.kr/ ] (EF) today released the 2023 edition of its EF English Proficiency Index [https://www.ef.co.kr/epi/ ] (EF EPI), the largest international survey of adult English skills. The index, calculated from the test results of 2.2 million non-native English speakers in 113 countries and regions, reveals a concerning decline in youth English proficiency over the past five years and a growing gender gap.

"This year's index portrays an illusion of global stability - where everyone's English stays about the same, but the truth is that gains in certain countries and regions are being offset by losses in others," said EF EPI author Kate Bell. "Language is essential to sharing perspectives and sparking understanding; and as a bridge language, English has been uniquely positioned to connect people across borders. We look forward to continuing our examination of English proficiency trends over time, as we did for the first time this year."

The EF EPI is based on test scores from the EF Standard English Test [https://www.efset.org/ ] (EF SET), used worldwide by schools, companies, and governments for large-scale testing as well as individual test takers.

Key findings include:

- Youth English proficiency continues to drop (-89 points in 18 - 20-year-olds since 2015), driven by a few large countries including India and Indonesia. Many more countries experienced pandemic-related declines in this cohort, accelerating the worldwide trend.

- Workforce proficiency is rising. Worldwide these gains were made during the pandemic period (+20 points for adults over 30 between 2020 and 2021), however, many national trends indicate steady improvement since 2015.

- The gender gap is widening, with men's English improving (+14 points) and women's declining (-19 points since 2014). The gender gap is not uniform, however, with 63 countries at or near gender parity.

- Regionally: Proficiency in East Asia has declined four years running, accelerated this year by Japan and China. Proficiency in the Middle East is stagnant. English is steadily improving in Latin America, but the region's progress is hampered by declining proficiency in Mexico and a slower pace in Brazil. Despite dominating the top of the index, Europe plateaued this year. Finally, English proficiency in Africa is largely stable except for Tunisia and Algeria, both improving quickly.
