Curiosity Cloud는 인간-자연 관계, 자연계에 미치는 인간의 영향력 및 생물다양성의 중요성에 대한 반추다. 염두에 둔 이 주제는 Maison Perrier-Jouet의 가치와 맥락을 같이 한다. 샴페인 명가 Maison Perrier-Jouet는 200년 동안 자연과의 공생을 진화시킨 유산을 보유하고 있다. 여기에는 지속가능한 포도 재배를 도모하고, 포도 재배가 환경에 미치는 영향을 줄이기 위한 야심 찬 신규 프로그램도 포함된다.

Curiosity Cloud 샹들리에는 빈에 위치한 유명 유리 제품 제조업체 Lobmeyr가 특별 제작한 세 가지 크기의 유리구 22개로 이뤄져 있다. 이들 유리구는 입으로 불어서 만든다. 각 유리구에는 미국에서 흔한 곤충 모형이 들어가 있다. 곤충 모형은 수공예로 제작한 것이며, 이는 Design Miami/ 2020의 미국 주제를 이야기한다. 그러나 토종 곤충도 결국 수많은 침입종이다. 이는 세계 여행과 운송 같은 인간 활동이 야기한 자연과 생물다양성 변화를 보여준다.

멀리서 보면 유리구 안에 들어있는 곤충이 조용하고 움직이지 않는 것처럼 보인다. 은은하게 빛나는 유리구 안에 들어있는 한두 마리는 살아있는 것처럼 보이기도 한다. 호기심 많은 관객이 가까이 다가가면 더 많은 곤충이 움직이기 시작한다. 유리구 안에서 빙빙 돌고, 날개를 파닥거려 미묘한 음악적 파노라마를 연출한다. 전통적인 공예 기법과 더불어 기술을 사용한 결과, 관객을 끌어들이는 쌍방향 설치물을 만들고, 놀라움, 흥미 및 논의를 촉발할 수 있었다.

Curiosity Cloud는 아르누보의 핵심적인 모티브에서 영감을 받아 예상치 못한 아름다움을 드러내는 곤충에 집중했다. 아르누보는 Maison Perrier-Jouet의 핵심이기도 하다. mischer'traxler는 특히 아무리 작고 하찮아도 자연의 각 요소가 이유와 목적을 지닌 존재라는 사실에 매료됐다.

Maison Perrier-Jouet commissions design studio mischer'traxler to create a sensory experience, Curiosity Cloud, illuminating the relationship between man and nature at Design Miami/ 2020

PARIS, Nov. 27, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Since 2012, Maison Perrier-Jouet has collaborated with Design Miami/ in order to offer contemporary artists and designers an international platform for their creativity. As part of this mission, Maison Perrier-Jouet commissions talents, both emerging and established, to reinterpret its enduring relationship with art and nature - and in particular its Art Nouveau heritage - through the prism of the 21st century.

For Design Miami/ 2020, Maison Perrier-Jouet is revisiting its collaboration with the Austrian design practice mischer'traxler, founded by Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler. Curiosity Cloud is a reflection on the relationship between man and nature, the influence of human activity on the natural world, and the importance of biodiversity. The mindful theme is in keeping with Maison Perrier-Jouet's values; the champagne house has a 200-year heritage of evolving in symbiosis with nature, which includes an ambitious new programme to promote sustainable viticulture and reduce its own environmental impact.

The Curiosity Cloud chandelier is composed of 22 mouth-blown glass bulbs of three different sizes, specially created by the renowned Viennese glassware company Lobmeyr. Each contains a painstakingly hand-crafted replica of an insect common in the United States, speaking to the America(s) theme of Design Miami/ 2020. However, among the native insects are also a number of invasive species, illustrating changes to nature and biodiversity that have been brought about by human activities such as global travel and transportation.

From a distance, the insects within the piece are quiet and still. Just one or two seem to come to life, their vessels emitting a soft, glowing light. As the intrigued spectator is drawn towards them, more insects start to move, swirling around inside their glass bulbs, their fluttering wings creating a subtle soundscape. The use of technology, combined with traditional craft techniques, allows the interactive installation to draw the viewer in, triggering surprise, intrigue and discussion.

Curiosity Cloud's focus on insects that reveal an unexpected beauty is inspired by a key motif in Art Nouveau; the movement which is at the core of Maison Perrier-Jouet. mischer'traxler are particularly fascinated by the fact that each element in nature, however small or apparently insignificant, has a reason and a purpose.

With this new phase in their collaboration, mischer'traxler and Maison Perrier-Jouet have created a moment of re-enchantment that opens up the possibility of a truly meaningful and transformative experience.
