SK Chairman Chey Tae-won’s daughter Chey Min-jeong will marry Chinese American entrepreneur Kevin Hwang in a ceremony on Sunday, with both her parents reportedly attending amid their ongoing divorce and legal dispute.
Chey met her fiance while the two were neighbors in Washingtong D.C., the Chosun Ilbo reported Thursday. Hwang was working for the U.S. Department of Defense at the time, while Chey was employed at INTRA (International Trade & Regulatory Affairs), an SK hynix subsidiary centered on international trade and policy.
The two reportedly grew closer through their shared military experience. Chey was the first heiress of a Korean conglomerate to enter the military. She completed her training at the Korea Naval Academy and served in the navy before being discharged in November 2017.
Hwang also has a diverse military background. He was born in Indiana and earned an undergraduate degree from Harvard University and an MBA in Stanford University before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 2016, rising to the rank of captain. The couple reportedly deepened their relationship during the nine months, beginning in October 2020, that Hwang spent serving in Korea as an army logistics officer.
Hwang joined the Marine Corps reserve in 2021. He now runs a software startup that he founded in California while serving his military duties. He will reportedly quit working at the company in November and join the U.S. Special Forces as an active-duty soldier.
Chey and Hwang will wed at the Grand Walkerhill Hotel in Gwangjin District, eastern Seoul, which is operated by SK Group subsidiary SK Networks.
