드와이트는 출근하여 사무실에 들어오자마자 자신의 자리에 책상이 없어진 것을 보고 소리칩니다. 정리해고라도 당한 것일까요? 그건 아니고 드와이트의 밉살스러운 행동을 보다 못한 동료 직원들이 단합하여 드와이트의 책상을 어디론가 숨겨 버린 것이었죠.

Dwight: Where is my desk? [내 책상 어디갔어?]Jim: That is weird. [거 참 이상하군.]Dwight: This is not funny, this is totally unprofessional. [재미없어. 전혀 프로답지 않아.]

당황하는 기색이 역력한 드와이트. 책상을 나란히 사용하던 옆자리의 짐이 너스레를 떱니다.Jim: Okay, calm down. [알았어, 진정하고.] Where was the last place you saw it? [마지막으로 본 곳이 어디야?]

Dwight: Okay, who moved my desk ? [누가 내 책상 옮겼어?]Jim: I think you should (1)______ your steps. [차근차근 되짚어 보는 게 어때.]

한편 팸은 습관적으로 결재를 미루는 지점장 마이클 때문에 또 야근을 하게 생겼습니다.Pam: I don't want to stay until 7:00 again this year. [올해는 7시까지 일하기 싫은데.] I don't really have any control over that. [저는 아무 권한도 없잖아요.] Michael tends to procrastinate... a bit whenever he has to do work. [지점장님은 무슨 일이든지 조금씩 미루는 경향이 있어요.]

Time cards. He has to sign these every Friday. [근무시간 기록표에는 매주 금요일에 서명을 해야 하고.] (2)______ orders have to be approved at the end of every month. [주문 내역서는 매달 말일에 승인이 되어야 하고요.] And expense reports. [지출 보고서도요.] All he has to do is initial these, at the end of every quarter. [지점장님이 하실 일은 매 분기마다 여기 서명을 하는 게 전부인데.] But once a year, it all falls on the same Friday. And that's today. [매년 같은 금요일이 되면 발등에 불이 떨어지죠. 그게 오늘이에요.] I call it the perfect storm. [전 '초대형 폭풍'이라고 불러요.]

마이클은 결재할 산더미처럼 쌓여있는 결재를 기다리는 서류들을 외면한 채 머그컵을 두드리며 태만하게 굴고 있습니다.

Michael Scott: " I don't want to work," [일 하기 싫어.] " I just want to bang on this mug all day." [하루 종일 머그컵이나 두드리고 싶다네.]

이때 임시직으로 일하는 라이언이 마이클의 사무실로 들어옵니다.Ryan: Did you ask me here for any specific reason? [절 여기 부르신 무슨 특별한 이유라도 있나요? ]

Michael Scott: Ah, yes, I did. [그렇다네.] I have a very top secret mission for you. [극비 임무를 하나 맡기려고 해.]

Pam: Well, the last pickup for overnight deliveries is at 7:00. [익일배송은 저녁 7시에 마지막으로 수거하거든요.] So you need to have them signed by then. Or much earlier. [그 전에 서명하시던지 더 일찍 하시던가요.]

Michael Scott: Relax, Pam. [진정해, 팸.] Actually, I'm sending Ryan on a top secret mission. [라이언한테 극비 임무를 맡기는 중이었어.] Okay, well, she walks out. Oppositions' Drive Shots Drive Away Voter Support (야당 의원들의 골프는 유권자들의 지지도를 날려 버린다)

Elected officials have every right to enjoy their hobbies, including taking golf tours abroad on weekends at their own expense.

선출직 공직자들도 취미를 즐길 권리는 있으며 여기에는 주말에 자기 돈으로 해외로 골프 여행가는 것도 포함된다.

So what's the media's fuss with nine lawmakers of the opposition Democratic Party (DP) traveling to Thailand for a five-day golfing excursion last week?

그런 마당에 언론이 야당인 민주당의 국회의원 9명이 지난 주 태국으로 골프 여행을 간 것을 두고 법석을 떨 이유가 무엇인가?

As we know, there were melees at the National Assembly recently making headlines in global media outlets along with a photo, which showed rival legislators and their aides locked in a scuffle mobilizing sledgehammers and fire extinguishers. But most of the lawmakers in question knew better than that and stayed away from the scenes.

알다시피 최근 국회에서 난장판이 벌어져서 여야 국회의원들과 보좌관들이 해머와 소화기까지 동원된 몸싸움을 하는 사진과 함께 세계 유수언론의 지면을 장식한 바 있다. 그러나 문제가 된 의원들의 대부분은 약게도 이 소동으로부터 떨어져 있었다.

Yes, the Assembly has just opened another extraordinary session to discuss scores of bills, which the governing Grand National Party attempted to railroad into laws but failed to in the face of popular opposition. Yet the golfing lawmakers must have finished their homework, and don't have to burn the midnight oil on weekends, as some of their less bright colleagues do.

국회가 여당인 한나라 당이 강행통과 시키려다 대중의 반대에 부딪쳐서 실패한 수십 개의 법안을 논의하기 위해 막 또 한번의 임시 회기를 시작한 것도 사실이다. 그러나 골프를 즐긴 의원들은 이미 숙제를 다 끝냈음이 분명하기 때문에 덜 똑똑한 동료들처럼 주말 밤늦게까지 공부할 필요가 없을 것이다.

Moreover, these representatives of the people have had to put off their overseas golfing no fewer than five times because of a ``hectic'' parliamentary schedule. By most appearances, they must be victims of the old politics by the governing camp spying on each and every move of opposition politicians.

게다가 이 국민의 대표들은 ``치열한" 국회 일정 때문에 무려 다섯 번이나 해외골프를 연기해 왔다. 아무리 보아도 이들은 틀림없이 여권이 야당 의원들의 일거수 일투족을 감시하는 공작정치의 희생자들이다.

Such were the excuses made, either explicitly or implicitly, by the controversial legislators, who belong to a political group posing itself as the ``party for poor people'' but couldn't wait for just a month or so before the end of the extra parliamentary sitting, in which dozens of urgent bills are awaiting serious discussion and quick legislation to help the nation get out of the deepening economic recession. How many voters will think this is a party eager and able to take power back in four years' time?

``서민의 정당"임을 자처하는 정치 집단에 속해 있으면서도 나라를 깊어지는 경제불황으로부터 구하기 위해 진지한 논의와 신속한 입법을 기다리는 긴급 법안들이 기다리는 임시 국회가 끝날 때까지 한 달도 기다리지 못했던 말썽 많은 국회의원들이 대놓고 혹은 은연중에 이 따위 변명들을 하고 있다. 유권자들 중 이것이 4년 뒤에 정권을 되찾아 오겠다는 열의나 능력이 있는 정당이라고 생각할 사람이 몇이나 될까?

The DP leadership has decided not to discipline them, which itself may be difficult, as the whole story is not about legal or even customary justifiability but about discretion, ethics and good sense _ and lack thereof of course.

민주당 지도부는 이들을 처벌하지 않기로 결정했는데 징계 자체는 어려울 수도 있는 것이 이것은 법적으로 혹은 관습적으로 정당한 가의 문제라기 보다는 분별력과 윤리 그리고 양식의 문제, 그리고 물론 이러한 것들이 없어서 일어난 문제이기 때문이다.

But there is no denying the main opposition party has suffered critical damage on its moral credence to fight against what it has billed as ``MB's (President Lee Myung-bak's) bad laws,'' allegedly aimed at ``making the rich people richer and poor people poorer.'' What baffles DP supporters more is the former governing party has criticized the GNP for not giving them sufficient time to discuss them.

그러나 제1 야당이 소위 ``부익부 빈익빈"의 ``MB 악법"에 대항해 싸울 도덕적 신임에 치명적인 상처를 입었다는 점은 부인할 수 없다. 민주당 지지자들을 더욱 당혹하게 하는 것은 이 예전의 여당이 한나라당이 자신들이 이 법안을 논의할 충분한 시간을 주지 않는다고 비난해 왔다는 점이다.

The golfing blunder comes on top of a series of DP's self-destructive moves, such as its obstruction of law enforcement against a party leader charged with violating campaign funding laws and receiving _ or exacting _ a large sum of money from a businessman as well as its failure to come up with policy alternatives resorting to only a ``physical struggle,'' an old tactic that worked and gained voters' sympathy before the nation's democratization two decades ago.

골프 사건은 민주당이 저지른 일련의 자충수 끝에 일어난 것으로 예를 들면 정치자금법을 어기고 기업인으로부터 거액의 돈을 받았거나 착취한 당 지도자 중 한 사람에 대한 사법권의 집행을 방해한 것이라든지 정책 대안은 제시하지 못하고 ``몸 싸움"에만 의존해 온 것 등으로서 이는 20년 전 나라가 민주화되기 이전에나 통했고 유권자들의 동조를 얻었던 낡은 전술이다.
