epa05309857 A picture made available 16 May 2016 shows a sculpture of newly arrived souls awaiting judgement from Phya Yom (2-R), the Death King, at Wang Saen Suk monastery in Chonburi, Thailand, 15 May 2016. Less than two hours outside Bangkok lies Wang Saen Suk, a monastery garden featuring statues depicting 'Naraka,' which in Buddhism it refers to hell or purgatory. Naraka, although it refers to hell, is often described as not eternal, with the length and type of punishment vary according to the way the person lived, and once the punishment is over the soul is reborn as a lower or higher being as per their merits. Upon entering the monastery and walking to the main courtyard, two large human figures in the form of a man and a woman stand above 4 emaciated sinners being boiled alive while guards stabbed them with spears. An array of 21 tortured souls, each with the head of a different animal, depending on the sin committed circle the two large figures. The depictions range from souls of sinners with protruding ribs boiling in copper cauldrons, to a woman being crashed in a vice for committing abortion or a man being dissemboweled for committing rape or sexual misconduct. At the end of the courtyard a Buddhist Monk sits facing a number of tortured souls begging for redemption. EPA/DIEGO AZUBEL
