[Africans in Our Midst] (56) Seeking happiness in Korea with two children: Congolese entrepreneur Yana
Beauty products for darker skin and curly hair, alongside trade linking Korea and Africa
Despite business and childcare challenges, she dreams of house with garden and future for her children
"I came looking for a place where my children and I could live happily."
Yana Loemba Delho is a French-born entrepreneur of Congolese heritage raising two children, aged 6 and 4, on her own in Korea.
On weekends, the 44-year-old sets up a stall on Shinjang Shopping Mall Street, outside the main gate of the U.S. military's Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province.
Under a parasol, she welcomes customers to her stall of hair care products, oils and hair extensions.
During an interview Oct. 10, she paused whenever customers approached, smiling as she explained her products.
She told the story of her search for happiness with her two children, a journey that took her from running a company in Congo to running an outdoor stall in Korea.
Born in Longjumeau, near Paris, to Congolese parents, Yana holds both French and Republic of Congo citizenship.
She has lived in France and Congo, as well as India, Cote d'Ivoire and England, encountering people and cultures from many backgrounds.
She studied film directing at EICAR, a private film school in Paris, from 2002 to 2005. She subsequently worked as a screenwriter, writing for projects that included "L'amour a 200 metres Afrique," a television show broadcast to French-speaking African countries through the French broadcaster Canal+.
Since 2011, she has been the CEO of NBY Immobilier Conseils, a real estate company in Congo. The company manages clients' homes and buildings, finds tenants and brokers property sales.
Since settling in Korea, she has entrusted daily operations to her deputy while remaining CEO and serving on the board.
Her background also includes a nomination for this year's Women's Leadership Award at KAFXA, an awards program recognizing Africans living in Korea.
In 2022, she got divorced, prompting her to seek a new place to build her life.
Looking for a country where she and her two children could be happy, she initially considered Finland and Mexico, in addition to Korea.
As a screenwriter, she frequently watched Netflix. She said the Korean drama "Goblin" helped draw her toward Korea. The country's education and health care systems also influenced her decision.
Yana first visited Korea in 2023.
She planned to research business opportunities she could pursue while also exploring what life there would be like for her and her two children.
"The first things I noticed were the clean streets and the friendly people," she said.
After deciding to move to Korea, Yana sold her house in Congo to raise the money needed to start a business and buy a home.
Seeking a business that would allow her to earn a living while raising her children, she focused on beauty products for people with darker skin and curly hair.
She said demand among mainstream Korean consumers was limited, making the products difficult to find in stores, such as Olive Young.
She wanted people who had been ordering from overseas online retailers to be able to buy them in Korea.
Following her market research, she established Loemba Products in March 2024. Two months later, she moved to Korea with her children on a D-8 business investment visa.
She decided to live in Pyeongtaek for its access to foreign customers and bought a home in a low-rise residential building for 180 million won.
She began fully importing and selling beauty products in November 2025.
She operates the online store Ebony Beaute, and in April, set up a weekend stall on Shinjang Shopping Mall Street under an operating agreement with the local chamber of commerce.
Her main customers are Black Africans and Americans, although Korean customers also buy some products, including oils.
Her best-selling items are hair extensions, which allow customers to change the length and color of their hair.
While she sells her products at the street market on weekends, she said she spends weekdays handling online sales from home or working at her Korean business partner's office in Seoul.
Yana also exports Korean cosmetics and beauty equipment to Africa, and trades in automotive parts.
She said African consumers' interest in Korean cosmetics has grown significantly, and she hoped to expand her business as a result.
Building a business in Korea, however, has brought repeated difficulties.
Early on, shampoos, conditioners and other hair care products were disposed of during customs clearance because she had not secured the required import documents. She acknowledged it was her mistake.
In another concerning case, makeup products worth 5,000 euros (US$5,591) have been held at customs since June last year.
Yana said she has submitted applications for a document review required for customs clearance more than 12 times, providing manufacturing and sales certificates and other required paperwork. But not only were none accepted, she hasn't received any explanation that she's found satisfactory yet.
She is working with her Korean business partner to find a solution, but the business disruption has also affected her residency.
Yana said insufficient revenue last year had led to her receiving only a three-month extension on her stay, during which she was expected to demonstrate her business activity.
She has since applied for another extension and is still awaiting a decision.
The short period of stay also makes it difficult to work while raising her children.
She would like her mother to come and help with childcare but said arranging the visit was difficult with her residency extension remaining unresolved.
One example highlighting Yana's struggles is that when she goes to the market, she needs someone to look after her children.
With no family in Korea to care for them, she currently pays a student from Uzbekistan 100,000 won ($75) a day to babysit.
She supports her family through her salary from the real estate company in Congo and income from her Korean business. Sales at the market help cover childcare costs and living expenses.
Yana also spoke about aspects of life in Korea that had surprised her.
She said she sometimes feels that, despite Korea being a developed country, people know little about how those in other countries live.
When she introduced herself as Congolese, some people were unfamiliar with the country. Their reactions changed when she said she was French.
She hoped Koreans would gain a broader understanding of Africa and the varied lives of its people.
"I wish people would not see Africans only as people who have migrated to escape poverty in their own countries; Koreans live in Congo too. In today's world, moving across borders is a normal part of life, and people do it for many different reasons."
Despite the difficulties, Yana wants to continue building a happy life with her children in Korea.
Her dream is to move into a detached house with a garden where they can play freely outdoors.
Both children speak French and English, and are gradually learning Korean.
She said she felt proud watching them grow up alongside friends from different backgrounds.
For Yana, who considers both France and Congo home, Korea is where her life is now rooted.
"I want my children to make friends from many different backgrounds, just as I did growing up. I want them to see people for who they are, rather than their skin color."
