[Mir’s Global Radar] “Shares Jump 30% on Sale Hopes”…Malaysia Sees a Tough Road Ahead for Lotte Chemical Titan

Shares of Lotte Chemical Titan Holding Bhd (LCT) surged in Malaysia after reports that its South Korean parent, Lotte Chemical Corp, is again considering a sale, but local analysts warn that a change in ownership alone would not solve the company’s structural problems.

Malaysian business daily The Star said in a StarBiz analysis published on Aug. 22 that LCT shares jumped about 30% after renewed reports of a possible divestment, reflecting investor hopes that a new owner could inject fresh capital and introduce a new strategy.

However, the paper stressed that weak petrochemical margins, excess regional capacity, low plant utilization and continuing losses mean that a turnaround would remain difficult even under new ownership.

Shares surge on sale hopes…expectations for fresh capital and a strategic reset

LCT shares rose sharply after the sale possibility resurfaced, reaching 40.5 sen on Aug. 20 before giving up part of the gains. They were trading at around 35 sen at the time of The Star’s report on Aug. 21.

That remains far below the company’s RM6.50 initial public offering price when it listed in 2017, but the latest sale speculation has at least provided a short-term catalyst for a stock that has struggled for years.

LCT told Bursa Malaysia that its parent company was considering “various strategic measures,” while emphasizing that no final decision had been made.

Investors are hoping that a new owner could bring in additional capital, restructure the business and improve operating efficiency.

A potential buyer would also gain immediate access to substantial petrochemical assets in both Malaysia and Indonesia, giving the portfolio strategic value for any investor seeking a regional production footprint.

Indonesia’s LINE project is attractive…but losses and low utilization remain major hurdles

The Star highlighted LCT’s sizeable production assets in Malaysia and Indonesia as one of its main attractions.

In particular, the LINE project in Cilegon, Indonesia, is a large integrated petrochemical complex that could appeal to a strategic investor seeking to establish or expand a presence in Southeast Asia without building new facilities from scratch.

Indonesia also remains a potentially attractive long-term market because domestic petrochemical supply continues to fall short of demand.

The problem, however, is profitability.

LCT’s revenue more than doubled in the second quarter of financial year 2026, helped by the contribution from the LINE project, but the company remained loss-making.

The Star also pointed to LCT’s utilization guidance of just 60% to 65% for FY2026, suggesting that any new owner would need to raise output, lower costs and improve operating efficiency at the same time.

In other words, the asset base may be attractive, but turning those assets into a sustainably profitable business would require substantial operational improvement.

China’s excess capacity adds another burden…“the real challenge begins after the sale”

External market conditions remain difficult as well. Asia’s petrochemical industry continues to suffer from oversupply, driven in large part by years of capacity expansion in China and weaker-than-expected demand.

Some research firms expect the pace of new Chinese capacity additions to slow somewhat following the Middle East crisis, but the structural oversupply problem has not disappeared.

That means the key question surrounding LCT’s sale may be less about who buys the company and more about who can successfully turn it around after the acquisition.

For Lotte Chemical, a divestment could help reduce exposure to loss-making assets and improve its financial structure.

For a buyer, however, the transaction would mean taking on three major challenges at once: low utilization, weak profitability and a difficult regional petrochemical environment.

The stock market may have reacted positively to renewed sale hopes, but the local view remains cautious. Even with a new owner, a meaningful turnaround will be difficult unless LCT can improve utilization, return to profitability and withstand continued oversupply across Asia’s petrochemical market.
