The Chinese Vice President Han Zheng flagged off the first train carrying cargo containers carrying tariff free Kenyan horticultural produce including, Coffee, Tea, Macadamia, Avocado and Minerals destined to the port of Mombasa for export to China during his two-day state visit to Kenya to enhance the two states bilateral relations. Kenya will now export their coffee, tea, avocado, nuts, fruits, vegetables, flowers and minerals to China at zero tariff, enhancing incomes to millions of its farmers, traders and export companies. China remains Kenya’s largest source of imports, however Kenya’s exports to the Chinese market remains relatively low. In 2024 for example, Kenya’s exports to China stood at USD 0.21 billion and imports from China were at USD 4.32 billion creating a trade deficit of around USD 4 billion. EPA/DANIEL IRUNGU
