AI 단백질 설계 플랫폼 구축
베링거와 공동 연구 계약 체결
항체 설계로 자체 신약개발도 추진

갤럭스는 인공지능(AI)을 활용해 단백질을 처음부터 설계하는 ‘드노보(de novo)’ 기술을 가진 회사다. 창업자는 서울대 화학부 석차옥 교수로, AI 기반 단백질 설계 플랫폼을 활용해 신약 후보 물질을 발굴하고 있다.

갤럭스의 핵심 기술은 AI 단백질 설계 플랫폼 ‘갤럭스디자인(GaluxDesign)’이다. 기존 AI 신약개발이 알려진 단백질 구조를 바탕으로 후보 물질을 개선하는 방식이라면, 갤럭스는 새로운 아미노산 서열과 단백질 구조를 처음부터 설계하는 드노보 단백질 설계 기술을 구현했다.

갤럭스는 최근 소규모 디자인만으로도 높은 결합력을 가진 항체 확보에 성공했다. 기존과 비교해 수백 배 이상의 설계 성공률을 기록했다고 회사 측은 밝혔다.

이 같은 기술력을 바탕으로 글로벌 제약사와의 협력을 확대하고 있다. 갤럭스는 독일 제약사 베링거인겔하임과 AI 기반 단백질 설계 기술을 활용한 공동 연구 계약을 체결했다. AI 단백질 설계 기업이 글로벌 빅파마와 공동 연구에 나선 사례는 국내에서 처음이라는 평가다.

국내 제약사 및 연구기관과의 협력도 이어지고 있다. 셀트리온, 한올바이오파마, LG화학, 동아에스티, 오스코텍 등 제약사와 공동 연구를 진행하고 있으며 서울아산병원과 고려대의료원 등 의료기관을 포함해 총 17개 기관과 파트너십을 구축했다.

갤럭스는 GPCR과 이온채널을 표적으로 한 항체 설계를 진행하며 자체 신약 개발도 추진하고 있다. 현재 리드 후보 확보와 동물 모델에서의 개념 검증을 목표로 연구를 진행 중이며 이후 후보물질 비임상 진입과 기술이전을 추진할 계획이다.

투자 유치도 이어지고 있다. 갤럭스는 최근 420억원 규모 투자 유치에 성공했다. 앞서 2022년 약 210억원을 조달한 데 이어 누적 투자 유치 금액은 약 680억원이다.

박태용 갤럭스 수석부사장은 “갤럭스는 인공지능을 활용해 질병의 표적 조직에 정확히 도달해 작동하는 치료 단백질을 설계하는 기술을 개발하고 있다”며 “AI 기반 단백질 설계를 통해 신약 개발의 정확성과 효율을 높이는 것이 목표”라고 말했다.

[영문] Galux Targets Next-Generation Drug Discovery with AI-Designed Proteins

Galux is a biotechnology company developing next-generation protein therapeutics using de novo protein design technology powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Founded by Seok Cha-ok, professor of chemistry at Seoul National University, the company focuses on discovering new drug candidates through its AI-based protein design platform.

The company’s core technology is its AI protein design platform GaluxDesign. While most AI-driven drug discovery approaches optimize drug candidates based on known protein structures, Galux’s technology designs entirely new amino-acid sequences and protein structures from scratch using de novo protein design.

Recently, Galux successfully generated high-affinity antibodies using a relatively small number of design iterations. The results demonstrated a design success rate hundreds of times higher than conventional approaches, according to the company.

Building on this technological capability, Galux has been expanding collaborations with global pharmaceutical companies. The company recently signed a research collaboration agreement with German pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim to apply its AI-based protein design technology. The partnership marks one of the first cases in which a Korean AI protein design company has entered a joint research program with a global big pharma company.

Galux has also been expanding partnerships with domestic pharmaceutical companies and research institutions. The company is conducting collaborative research with firms including Celltrion, HanAll Biopharma, LG Chem, Dong-A ST, and Oscotec, and has established partnerships with 17 organizations, including major medical institutions such as Asan Medical Center and Korea University Medical Center.

In parallel, Galux is pursuing proprietary drug development programs. The company is currently designing antibodies targeting GPCRs and ion channels, with the goal of securing lead candidates and demonstrating proof-of-concept in animal models. The company plans to advance candidates into preclinical development and pursue technology licensing through strategic partnerships.

Galux has also continued to attract investment. The company recently raised KRW 42 billion (approximately USD 31 million) in funding. Combined with KRW 21 billion raised in 2022, Galux’s total funding has reached approximately KRW 68 billion.
