Day after the Sri Lanka's Parliamentary Election

Polling ended peacefully, with a turnout of 65 percent. More than 17.1 million people were registered to vote to elect 225 members to form a new parliament. According to the latest official results, the Marxist-leaning National People's Power (NPP) alliance, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is in the lead with more than two-thirds of the seats in Parliament. President Dissanayake dissolved parliament on September 24 after securing victory in the first presidential election since the mass protests and political turmoil triggered by the country's economic collapse in 2022.
