Brake pads with aramid pulp applied. (Kolon Industries)
Kolon Industries Inc. successfully completed an expansion of its production facilities to double its annual output from 1,500 to 3,000 tons. The strategic move aims to strengthen the company’s position in the high-value product market.

South Korea’s sole mass producer of aramid pulp announced an investment of about 22 billion won ($15.7 million) in its Gumi plant, located in North Gyeongsang Province, on Wednesday. The newly expanded facilities have commenced trial operations, with full-scale product deliveries scheduled to begin in December 2024.

Aramid pulp is produced by mechanically processing aramid fibers into a fibrous form. Known for its exceptional strength and heat resistance, it is primarily used as a reinforcement material in automotive components such as brake pads and tire rubber. Due to the complex manufacturing process and high entry barriers, aramid pulp is considered a high-value product.

Notably, brake pads incorporating aramid pulp can reduce particulate emissions by up to 70 percent compared to traditional products. These brake pads are also compliant with the Euro 7 environmental regulations set to take effect in November 2026. The company plans to complete trial operations and commence full-scale product deliveries in December 2024.
