Vector-borne diseases rise in Sindh amid lack of fumigation

epaselect epa11718908 People afflicted by vector-borne diseases receive medical care at a hospital in Hyderabad, Sindh province, Pakistan, 13 November 2024.

In Sindh, over 17,000 malaria cases have been reported in just two weeks, contributing to a total of 267,389 mosquito-borne illness cases from January to early November. Malaria has emerged as the most prevalent, with 265,021 cases, while dengue and chikungunya have reported 2,179 cases and 189 cases, respectively. Hyderabad is the most affected region. Experts warn that these figures likely underestimate the true scale of the outbreak due to gaps in surveillance and inadequate healthcare funding. To combat the spread of vector-borne illnesses, the provincial government has implemented strong measures and initiated extensive fumigation efforts across different districts. EPA/NADEEM KHAWER
