LG Display announced that it has successfully developed the industry’s first stretchable display that can expand up to 50% of its original size.

The company unveiled the display on Nov. 8 during the final review meeting of the government-led the stretchable display development project at LG Science Park in Seoul, showcasing five years of research and development achievements.

The stretchable display technology allows the screen to be expanded, folded, and twisted freely. Lightweight and thin, it can adhere to irregular surfaces, such as clothing or skin, opening possibilities for broad applications across sectors including fashion and mobility.

The newly revealed prototype features a 12-inch screen that can expand to 18 inches while maintaining high resolution of 100 pixels per inch (ppi) and displaying red, green, and blue (RGB) colors. Compared to the initial prototype released in 2022, which had a maximum stretchability rate of 20%, this latest model doubles the stretchability to 50%, offering greater flexibility in display design.

An LG Display representative noted, “We applied several new technologies, such as enhanced characteristics of a special silicon substrate used in contact lenses and a new wiring structure design, to improve flexibility significantly. This exceeds the initial target stretchability rate of 20% set by the national project.”
