Sri Lanka's first transgender candidate to run in parliamentary election

Chanu Nimesha, a 49-year-old transgender woman, is making history as the first openly transgender candidate to run in a Sri Lankan election. Representing the Kegalle District for the Socialist Party of Sri Lanka under the Balloon symbol, she also serves as the party's Secretary of Women?s Affairs. Her candidacy marks a significant step forward for gender diversity, equality, and LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual) rights in the country.
