South Korea’s customs agency is getting ready to use an automated system designed to identify high-risk or suspicious travelers, such as smugglers. The system is now ready for full-scale deployment at both airports and seaports.

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Korea Customs Service plan to complete testing on advanced technologies to be used in customs checkpoints by the end of 2024.

The two authorities showcased their recent innovations for more efficient and accurate clearance work. Both organizations have been working together since 2021 to develop advanced technologies for customs applications at airports and seaports.

Among the innovations, a new compound X-ray for small cargo can detect even low-density substances such as drugs by combining transmission and X-ray scattering methods, enhancing detection accuracy. Another eye-catching technology prepared for full-scale use is an artificial intelligence-powered system that can track and check suspicious travelers.
