Sculptures of Russian Museum's Summer Garden prepared for winter in St. Petersburg

epa11674814 Municipal workers cover a sculpture with pieces of cloth and a wooden case as part of measures to protect it during winter at the Summer Garden in St. Petersburg, Russia, 22 October 2024. The tradition of preserving the sculptures of the Summer Garden of the Russian Museum during the winter months began in the 18th century, during the reign of Anna Ioannovna. Initially, the statues were wrapped in canvas, but the canvas would become wet and freeze. By the 1820s, wooden cases were introduced, which provided more reliable protection for the sculptures. After the garden was reconstructed, the original collection of sculptures was replaced with copies made from polymer marble, except for the 'Nishtadsky World'. The original marble sculptures that adorned the Summer Garden for 300 years have been relocated to the Mikhailovsky Castle since 2011, where they are displayed permanently for public viewing.
