South Korean tech giant LG Electronics Inc. is advancing its technology to prevent accidents caused by drunk and drowsy driving.

LG Electronics’ Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Research Center announced on Monday that it signed a business agreement with the Korea Expressway Corporation Research Institute last Thursday to research preventing accidents related to driver factors.

The primary focus is on enhancing the “in-cabin sensing” solution technology, which detects and prevents traffic accidents caused by driver negligence, such as drunk driving, drowsy driving, or using a smartphone while driving.

LG Electronics is developing a next-generation in-cabin sensing solution that, in addition to detecting driver negligence, incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize the driver’s face and automatically adjust seat positions, air conditioning, and lighting.

Drivers can control vehicle functions through voice commands and gesture control without touching the display. The system can also detect items such as wallets or smartphones left behind in the car when exiting and notify the driver.

LG Electronics and the Korea Expressway Corporation Research Institute plan to apply driver response data collected from road-driving simulators to LG’s in-cabin sensing solution. These simulators use virtual reality technology to replicate extreme driving conditions that are difficult to simulate in real life, allowing for a wide range of driving tests.
