Serbian Parliament holds debate over lithium mining

The regular autumn session of the Serbian Parliament began on 07 October, with the first item on the agenda being the proposed amendments to the Law on Mining and Geological Research, which seeks to ban applied geological research, exploitation, and processing of boron and lithium ores. In the proposal, it is specified that permits for lithium and boron exploration that are valid on the day of the law's amendment cannot be extended. The law's proponents argue that mining lithium from the ore Jadarite, involving the use of concentrated sulfuric acid, poses significant environmental and health risks, as it releases harmful substances into the air, contaminates water, and threatens both agricultural land and local ecosystems.
