Kim Ye-ji takes aim at deepfake content in ad for Jeonbuk police

Olympic silver medalist Kim Ye-ji featured in two public service announcements by the Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency warning against deepfake and phishing crimes.

Olympic shooter Kim Ye-ji is on a mission to combat the country's growing societal issue of deepfake content.

“The production and distribution of illegal synthesized materials using AI deepfakes all leave records,” says Kim in a video aimed at preventing deepfake crimes that was released by the Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency on its Facebook account on Thursday.

The police agency said on Friday that it filmed two promotional videos featuring the Olympic star. One highlights the seriousness of deepfake crimes, while the other focuses on preventive measures against phone fraud.

Kim also shares tips for preventing bank fraud in a video, saying, “Always doubt and check.”

“It’s not that you haven’t been fooled by phishing. Your turn just hasn’t come yet,” continued Kim.

The police agency plans to use these videos as educational materials, sharing them with financial and educational institutions across the province.

“We expect that Kim Ye-ji’s participation in the videos, given her global influence and popularity, will have a greater impact on crime prevention,” an official from the police agency said. “We will strive to prevent crimes against civilians through various promotional activities.”

Kim went viral for her remarkable performance that earned her a silver in the women’s 10-meter air pistol at the Paris Olympics in July, propelling her onto U.S. broadcaster NBC’s “Top 10 Stars to Watch” list for the global sporting event.

She was also touted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk on social media in July, praising her with a post on X that said, “She should be cast in an action movie. No acting required!”

Kim recently signed with the agency Plfil on Aug. 19 to assist with her promotional activities and is set to kick off her acting career with a role in a spin-off series of the film “Asia" that is still in production.
