10MW offshore exclusive generator. (Unison)
South Korean wind power company Unison announced Thursday that it has successfully developed a 10MW direct-drive offshore wind turbine, the largest of its kind in the country. The turbine, which has been in development since 2018, marks a key milestone in the Korean renewable energy sector.

Unison confirmed that it completed the production of two 10MW turbines and is now preparing for testing, following 2023’s successful no-load operation. The turbines have already passed manufacturing and design assessments by the Korea Energy Agency and UL. Performance tests, under the supervision of a certification body, are scheduled for October 2024, with component certification the last step in the process.

The company plans to integrate the new turbines into prototype wind farms for real-world performance validation before finalizing them for commercial release. According to Unison, the 10MW wind turbines are expected to be commercialized by the first half of 2026 and the company is currently assembling prototype turbines.
