Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly decided to trigger an additional year option on captain Son Heung-min’s contract to keep him through the 2025-26 season, although the Korean forward said Wednesday that he has yet to hold any talks with the club over the matter.

Son’s contract with Spurs ends next summer, but the club can keep him for one more year by activating the option, which they are expected to do according to multiple sources.

But the captain confirmed that he has not held talks over the extension option.

Speaking in a post-match press conference in London on Wednesday for Thursday’s Europa League game against Qarabag FK, he said: “We haven’t talked anything yet. In the future, you never know what is gonna happen, but I’ll make sure I give everything for this club because it’s been almost 10 years that I give everything, so we’ll see what happens, so I still have a contract with the club, which is mainly a very important thing.”

Making his professional debut at Bundesliga club Hamburger SV in 2010, Son had a successful stint with Hamburger and Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Germany before joining Spurs in 2015.

Since joining Spurs, he has played as a regular pick and signed a six-year contract extension in 2018 and a four-year renewal in 2021.

During his nearly decade-long spell with Spurs, he has racked up 164 goals and 86 assists across 414 matches to become the fifth-highest goal scorer for the London side and winning the 2021-22 Premier League Golden Boot. He became captain of the club last season.

Despite the remarkable individual stats, he has yet to lift a single trophy at Spurs as the club has fallen short in England and Europe.

Son, 32, is still a key player at both the club and Korean national team. He scored 17 goals in 35 league fixtures last season to lead his side to finish in fifth place and has picked up two goals in five matches so far this campaign.

Over with the national team, he is also a regular pick with 129 caps, 49 goals and 22 assists under his belt.

He has also yet to lift a single trophy with the national team, crashing out of four Asian Cups and three World Cups. A runner-up finish at the 2015 Asian Cup and reaching the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup are the best results he has seen with Korea.

Spurs will be back in action with their first Europa League match of the season against Qarabag FK at gome on Thursday, followed by a league fixture against Manchester United on Sunday.

Tottenham sit in 10th place with two wins, one draw and two losses as of press time Thursday.
