China's self-driving taxi industry

China's capital Beijing initiated the autonomous driving demonstration area in September 2020, and approved the commercial operation of fully autonomous driving services in Beijing E-Town in March 2023. By the end of 2023, over 30 Chinese cities had issued road test licenses for autonomous driving, Wuhan had opened 3,379 km of one-way testing roads across 3,000 square km, benefiting 7.7 million local residents. Pony.ai deployed around 250 robotaxis in China's Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, around 100 of which are now available in the autonomous driving zone in Beijing, offering paid services for passengers. China's robotaxis service is expected to reach 1.3 trillion yuan (165.22 billion euros) by 2030, according to forecasts from the global consultancy firm IHS Markit. EPA/WU HAO
