Feyenoord midfielder Hwang In-beom made it into the Eredivisie team of the week after playing his first league match for his side over the weekend, ESPN announced Monday.
Hwang, 28, made his first Eredivisie appearance in Feyenoord’s 2-0 win over NAC Breda at home on Sunday, playing the full 90 minutes and achieving 82 percent pass accuracy.
That performance allowed him to seal a place in the team of the week alongside his teammate Ayase Ueda, who scored a goal in Sunday's fixture.
This season is Hwang’s first with Feyenoord, having joined the Dutch side earlier this month from Serbian team Red Star Belgrade, where he won the league and Serbian Cup titles and earned the league Player of the Year honors last season.
Hwang is a classic box-to-box number eight, with as much of a talent for defending as he has for moving the ball up the pitch. He has been a key midfielder for the Korean national team, with 62 caps under his belt.
Before Sunday's fixture, Hwang had already made his debut for Feyenoord in his side’s 4-0 loss to Leverkusen in the Champions League group stage match on Sept. 19.
This is his second straight season competing in the Champions League, where he made his debut with Red Star last campaign, during which he picked up a goal and assist against then-defending champions Manchester City.
Feyenoord has seven more group stage matches to play in the Champions League this season.
Until Feyenoord’s next Champions League game against Girona on Oct. 3, the club will be in league action with the team facing NEC Nijmegen on Sept. 29.
Feyenoord sit in fifth place on the 18-team table with two wins and three draws as of press time Tuesday. PSV Eindhoven are at the top of the table with six straight wins.
