Samsung Electronics Co. announced a new PCIe 4.0 auto solid-state drive (SSD) on Tuesday. The newest SSD is built with eighth-generation vertical NAND (V-NAND), the first in the industry.

The company provided samples of the so-called AM9C1 in 256GB to its key customers. The 256GB model features the fastest read and write speeds of 4,400MB/s and 400MB/s respectively. By switching from its original triple-level cell (TLC) state to SLC mode, users can enjoy faster read and write speeds of up to 4,700MB/s and 1,400MB/s respectively, according to a statement by Samsung Electronics.

With about 50 percent improved power efficiency compared to its predecessor, the new auto SSD was classified as Grade 2 in the AEC-Q100, an industry-standard specification that helps to ensure the quality and reliability of electronic components used in automotive applications.

The AM9C1 will be available in various capacities, ranging from 128GB to 2 terabytes (TB).
