K-pop powerhouse HYBE is ramping up its efforts to combat AI deepfake content, which has recently become a significant issue in Korea.

"The creation and dissemination of fictitious explicit photos and videos of an artist is a blatant digital sex crime that not only infringes on the artist's human rights but also severely undermines basic ethics," HYBE said in its Monday announcement about launching a portal for reporting violations of its artists' rights.

The agency emphasized its commitment to tackling deepfake content through the new portal.

“We have created a separate category to expedite and bolster our response to illegal pornography, including AI-generated ‘deepfake’ sexual exploitation content, which has become a serious social problem in recent years.”

The agency said that it is actively monitoring platforms like Telegram, X, formerly Twitter, and Discord for deepfake content and is collaborating with authorities for a coordinated response.

"We are working to strengthen our collaboration with relevant government agencies, including the Korea Communications Standards Commission, as well as civic organizations," the agency said.

The new portal consolidates existing reporting channels for each artist and is designed to help fans report defamatory posts and copyright infringements more efficiently, allowing the agency to respond swiftly and systematically, according to HYBE.

Reports of malicious content can be submitted under various categories, including Defamation, Rumors or False Information, Sexual Harassment, AI Deepfake Abuse and Stalking.

The agency reiterated its commitment to pursuing regular legal action against malicious posts and copyright violations without leniency.

“HYBE will always strive to ensure that the rights of our artists are fully protected.”

HYBE is home to numerous renowned artists, including BTS, Tomorrow X Together, Enhypen and Le Sserafim.

On Monday, Korea's National Police Agency announced that 515 undercover investigations into illegal deepfake pornography since September 2021 have resulted in the arrest of 1,415 people.
