A farmer in Haenam County, South Jeolla, inspects a rice paddy that was flooded due to extreme rainfall over the weekend on Monday.
The inundation compounds damage incurred due to 23.1 days of heat wave from July 21 to Aug. 31, during which temperatures averaged 28.5 degrees Celsius (83.3 degrees Fahrenheit). Some 19,603 hectares (48,440 acres) of fields were affected, or 13.3 percent of total cultivable land.
Plummeting prices have hit rice farmers hard this year. The price of an 80-kilogram (176-pound) sack of rice stood at 217,522 won ($162.77) last year but fell 18.3 percent to 177,740 won this August.
