Hanwha Ocean Co. and HD Hyundai Co. moved a step closer to the commercialization of liquid hydrogen carriers powered by carbon-free energy sources.

Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Group’s HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. announced on Thursday that they received Approval-in-Principle (AIP) from Norwegian classification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for an 80,000-cubic-meter electric-powered liquid hydrogen carrier during the Gastech Exhibition & Conference 2024 being held in Houston from Tuesday to Friday.

Hanwha Ocean’s DNV-certified liquid hydrogen carrier generates electricity using hydrogen gas naturally vaporized from the cargo hold, allowing it to operate without emitting carbon dioxide during voyages. For its part, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering’s liquid hydrogen carrier is equipped with HD Hyundai’s latest large-scale liquid hydrogen tanks and an electric propulsion system using a dual-fuel Hi-touch Marine & Stationary Engine (HiMSEN) that runs on both ship’s fuel (bunker fuel) and hydrogen.
