“I, the Executioner” was the most popular movie in theaters this Chuseok holiday, surpassing 4 million viewers on Wednesday, according to Korea Box-office Information System (Kobis).
The action-thriller, which premiered Friday, held the top spot on the local box office for the entire Chuseok holiday from Sept. 14 to 18. Until Tuesday, it was responsible for 85.7 percent of total movie ticket sales of the holiday period, per Kobis.
Kobis data also showed an increase in the overall number of theatergoers during this Chuseok compared to recent years. The first four of the five-day holiday saw 3.73 million moviegoers, which is 620,000 more than the 3.11 million recorded during 2023's six days of Chuseok.
Starring actors Hwang Jung-min and Jung Hae-in, “I, the Executioner” is a sequel to director Ryoo Seung-wan's 2015 film “Veteran” and continues veteran detective Seo Do-cheol's journey chasing after a villain. "Veteran" attracted over 13 million moviegoers and ranks No. 7 on Korea’s all-time box office list based on audience numbers.
