"We are expanding our product range to include eco-friendly banners, pet waste bags, sanitary gloves, and sanitary roll bags," Kim said. "We expect sales to total around 1.5 billion won ($1.12 million) in 2024."
"We exported samples to the United States and Canada this year, and buyers have expressed interest in repurchasing. It seems that there is more interest in the United States and Europe, where people are more sensitive to environmental issues than in Korea."

Mulching film, which is used to cover the ground during farming to prevent weeds, was traditionally made of plastic, which caused significant environmental pollution when it was burned or landfilled after use.
Kim, a North Korean defector from Cheongjin, North Hamgyong Province, founded her company in 2021 to solve this issue by developing an eco-friendly agricultural mulching film.
“After defecting from North Korea, I got married to a South Korean man and had a child, but my child suffered from severe atopic dermatitis. That experience sparked my interest in eco-friendly businesses,” Kim said in a recent interview with Maeil Business Newspaper.
The primary ingredients in the eco-friendly film produced by HLS Eco-Friendly are corn starch and sugarcane. Her co-founder, the head of the company’s research lab, has over 20 years of experience researching biodegradable resins.
“The price of our eco-friendly film is comparable to regular plastic products thanks to government subsidies, and the film naturally biodegrades after about six months, so there is no need to remove it,” Kim said, stressing that it is both environmentally friendly and saves labor.
HLS Eco-Friendly has a 1,320 square meter factory with automated facilities in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, to mass produce its products.
“We are expanding our product range to include eco-friendly banners, pet waste bags, sanitary gloves, and sanitary roll bags,” Kim said. “We expect sales to total around 1.5 billion won ($1.12 million) in 2024.”
“We exported samples to the United States and Canada this year, and buyers have expressed interest in repurchasing. It seems that there is more interest in the United States and Europe, where people are more sensitive to environmental issues than in Korea.”
Kim also attributed much of her success to the Asan Nanum Foundation’s startup support program for North Korean defectors.
