Rookie girl group Meovv starts its career with advice from Blackpink’s Rosé embedded deeply in their hearts: To love music and cherish every moment when they can.
“She told us so many great things, but she told us first and foremost that we have to deeply love music and take in everything when given the time and the opportunity to do so. I could really tell how sincere she is toward music,” member Gawon said Friday.
In a rare move in post-pandemic K-pop, the girl group held an online showcase to answer questions from reporters collected before the event. The girl group will release its first single, “Meow,” on Friday at 6 p.m.
Meovv, pronounced meow, comes as the first girl group from The Black Label since the agency was founded by esteemed producer Teddy in 2016 as a subsidiary of YG Entertainment. The agency currently manages Taeyang of the boy band Big Bang, Rosé of the girl group Blackpink, singer Jeon Somi and more.
Teddy is a veteran producer in the Korean music industry, responsible for numerous K-pop hits from artists including Blackpink, Big Bang and 2NE1.
The company has been drip-feeding the public with information about each member leading up to Friday, similar to the tactic used by YG Entertainment when it rolled out girl group BabyMonster in April to build up anticipation for the newly debuting group. Even after Friday’s showcase, much remained unanswered, giving the girl group an aura of mystery.
“We plan on showing powerful music and a strong side as well as cute and nice sides,” Anna said. “We chose the sound that cats make to express this contrasting image."
“We’re truly grateful for this day,” Ella said. “We won’t be able to forget this moment. We’ll try our best so that Meovv can be remembered as a good group to everyone.”
