Thailand launches nationwide eradication campaign to fight spread of invasive blackchin tilapia

epaselect epa11586711 Officials from the Department of Fisheries and fishermen catch blackchin tilapia fish with a net during a nationwide eradication campaign to combat the spread of the invasive fish, at a canal in Samut Prakan province, on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, 05 September 2024. Thailand has captured more than 1.3 million kg of the invasive African Blackchin Tilapia fish after the government declared a nationwide campaign encouraging people to catch the fish for consumption and the production of fish meal products. The blackchin tilapia is an invasive species found in the waters of 19 provinces of Thailand, causing damage to the ecological system in rivers, canals and swamps resulting in the decline of native fish species and aquatic animals, according to Thailand's Department of Fisheries. The blackchin tilapia fish, originally native to Ghana, was imported for research and breeding by an agribusiness company in 2010, but it remains unclear how the fish spread into Thai waters.
