Hanjin recently completed the transport of equipment for producing lithium salt (LiPF6), a crucial material for the secondary battery industry, the South Korean company said on Wednesday.

Hanjin signed a contract with PGT, a specialty precision chemical company, to manage the entire logistics process for manufacturing equipment used to produce lithium salt for secondary batteries in May 2024. The equipment, consisting of 33 production modules, weighed 1,830 tons in total.

PGT, which manufactures pharmaceutical ingredients, cosmetic materials, and various other precision chemicals, plans to use this new equipment to produce up to 5,000 tons of lithium salt annually.

Hanjin completed the first phase of maritime transport from July 11th to July 20th, 2024, moving 17 modules, followed by a second phase from August 25th to September 3rd during which 16 additional modules were transported. The equipment will be transferred via land to PGT’s factory in Gunsan by September 10th.

The logistics route spanned from Nantong, China, to Korea’s Gunsan Port. The equipment was loaded at the Morimatsu shipyard in Nantong, shipped to Gunsan Port, and will be moved by land transport to PGT’s Gunsan factory.

Demand for lithium salt-related equipment is rising due to the increasing demand for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. In addition to transporting this lithium salt production equipment, Hanjin continues to diversify its logistics services to specialize in various tailored logistics solutions.
