Port Sunlight, 19th century model village, built to accommodate soap factory workers

epaselect epa11582172 An aerial photograph taken with a drone shows the Lady Lever Art Gallery (C-back) and workers' houses, in Port Sunlight, Britain, 03 September 2024. Port Sunlight was founded in 1888 by William Lever of manufacturers Lever Brothers, now Unilever, to provide high quality accommodation for workers at his soap factory. As an early example of urban planning, the 'model village' contained all the amenities needed for residents' physical and spiritual wellbeing and included parkland, allotments, an art gallery, a swimming pool and a church. The town's design was intended to promote good living, education and healthy recreation amongst the working classes, as well as inspiring company loyalty. Today the town remains largely intact, and until the 1980s was still inhabited exclusively by employees of Unilever and their families. EPA/ADAM VAUGHAN ATTENTION: This Image is part of a PHOTO SET
