President Yoon Suk Yeol and new Vietnamese leader To Lam discussed ways to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries in a phone call Tuesday, according to the presidential office.
Yoon offered his congratulations to Lam on becoming Vietnam's president and the Communist Party's general secretary, his office said.
"I hope that our two countries will further strengthen strategic cooperation in comprehensive fields such as trade, investment, high-tech industries, infrastructure, security and defense, based on the achievements in cooperation that have been developed dramatically over the past 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations," Yoon was quoted as saying by his office.
Lam became Vietnam's president in May after previously serving as public security minister.
He was named as Vietnam's next Communist Party general secretary after the death of Nguyen Phu Trong, who had served in that position since 2011, in July.
