A forum exploring the literary contributions of renowned Korean author Lee Hyo-seok is set to take place in September 2024.

Seoul National University and the Lee Hyo-seok Literature Enhancing Association announced on Wednesday that the “1st Lee Hyo-seok Literature Forum: Rediscovering the Works of Lee Hyo-seok” will be held on September 6 in Bongpyeong, Gangwon Province.

Lee is best known for his short novel, “When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom.” However, his literary range extends far beyond his reputation as a writer of local color and lyrical beauty.

Lee, who embraced Western influences like coffee and piano, which was uncommon for his time, also incorporated themes of cross-border journeys in his works.

Professor Bang Min-ho of Seoul National University highlighted the universal and artistic value of Lee’s work, saying, “Lee’s literature possesses a unique appeal that resonates with a wide audience. His works not only showcase exceptional lyricism but also include sharp critiques of Japan’s wartime mobilization system during the late colonial period, reflecting universal, humanistic values.”
