At least 53 killed, railway lines sabotaged by suspected militants in Pakistan's Balochistan province

epaselect epa11569243 A burnt vehicle remains on roadside near a key rail bridge that was destroyed by suspected militants in Koolpur, in restive Balochistan province, Pakistan, 28 August 2024. The crucial colonial-era railway bridge in Koolpur was severely damaged in coordinated attacks by separatist militants on 26 August, which also targeted key bridge routes by explosives resulting in halting train services. The bridge, which connects Balochistan to the rest of Pakistan, was blown apart, with sections of the track obstructing a motorway beneath it. Provincial Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti said at least 53 people, including members of security forces, were killed in a series of assaults that drew nationwide condemnation and marked one of the worst incidents in the region's troubled history, where security forces have long struggled against sectarian and separatist violence.
