Syrian journalists protest after a colleague was arrested in northern Syria

epa11567486 A Syrian journalist holds a placard reading in Arabic 'Where is the sovereignty of the state and the law, oh tools of foreign intelligence agencies?' during a protest against the detention of their colleague Bakr Qassim, in Idlib, Syria, 27 August 2024. The protesters held placards calling for the release of Qassim and other detained journalists and to put an end of interreference of foreign intelligence service in rebel-held areas of northern Syria. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) called for the immediate release of Qassim who was detained along with his wife Nabiha Taha on 26 August on their way home from reporting in northwest Syria. Taha has been released, while Qassim ? freelance journalist contributing to international news agencies - remains detained and denied access to a lawyer and visitors, a RSF statement reads. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the couple was arrested by 'Turkish intelligence service and the military police' stationed at Al-Bab city, however there was no immediate comment from the local authorities controlling northern Syria.
