The statue of Archangel Gabriel in Budapest goes for restoration

epa11567166 Scaffolds surround the considerably eroded statue of Archangel Gabriel, the centrerpiece of Heroes Square, in Budapest, Hungary, 26 August 2024 (issued 27 August 2024). The 4.8-meter tall bronze statue, which holds a two-barred Patriarchal cross and a representation of the Holy Crown of Hungary, was finished in 1897 before it was erected atop a carved Corinthian column of 36 meters in height. Hungarian sculptor Gyorgy Zala was commissioned to create Gabriel?s statue for the centennial celebrations, and his monumental portrayal of the patron saint won a prestigious prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition. It was finally inaugurated in October of 1901, and only minor preservations have been done to it since onsite. For its first removal in 123 years, the hollow bronze piece will be cut into several parts during the dismantling process for transportation to the restoration workshop, and it is likely to be reinstated in the first half of 2025.
