Korean seaweed is gaining widespread popularity as a healthy snack, fueled by the global K-food wave. CJ CheilJedang’s Bibigo seaweed saw a significant surge in overseas sales in the second quarter of 2024.

CJ CheilJedang announced on Sunday that its seaweed export sales increased by 42 percent in the second quarter compared to the same period the previous year. The company exports Korean seaweed to over 60 countries.

The rising global demand for Korean seaweed is attributed to its growing reputation as a healthy food option. The frequent appearance of K-food in Korean dramas and variety shows has also boosted international preference for Korean seaweed.

According to Korea Customs Service data, seaweed exports from January to July of 2024 totaled $636.97 million, a 35 percent increase from the same period in 2023. Export volume also grew by around 3 percent to 22,509 tons, with this trend reflecting the continued global interest in Korean seaweed.

By country, Korea’s seaweed exports to the United States and Japan grew rapidly. The total for the United States hit $128.93 million, up 34 percent on-year, and was $131.68 million, or up 53 percent, in Japan.

CJ CheilJedang said that the perception of Korean seaweed as a healthy snack made from nutritious ingredients is becoming stronger in global markets, especially in Europe and the United States. The company is focusing its efforts on these regions as strategic markets.

“Korean seaweed is viewed as a healthy snack made from superfoods in Europe and the United States, while its popularity as a K-snack is driven by the Hallyu phenomenon in Southeast Asia,” a CJ CheilJedang spokesperson said.
