South Korea’s auto giant Hyundai Motor Group is making significant strides in automotive thermal management technology.

The auto conglomerate recently introduced a new technology called Nano Cooling Film, one of the company’s innovations to lower the temperature inside a vehicle in hot weather without window tinting.

The innovation is expected to attract considerable attention in the United States, with stricter regulations on use of window tinting, and in the Middle East, known for extremely hot summers.

Unlike traditional window tinting, which simply blocks external heat and keeps it inside the film, Nano Cooling Films allow internal heat to escape, thanks to a unique composition of three layers, according to Lee Min-jae, a Senior Research Engineer at Hyundai Motor Group’s Energy Devices Research Team.

The film’s outer layer emits heat from the vehicle‘s interior to the exterior at mid-infrared wavelengths, while the inner two layers reflect incoming heat at near-infrared wavelengths, effectively reducing the overall amount of heat that enters the vehicle from outside.

“We are focused on ensuring the quality and efficiency needed for mass production, taking into account factors such as light resistance,” Lee said.
