The two display panel makers said Tuesday that they participated in the 2024 International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) hosted by Jeju Island.
Samsung Display showcased its stretchable display with micro light-emitting diode (LED) technology. The display boasts industry-leading resolution and stretchability, with the ability to expand up to 1.25 times its original size and a resolution comparable to gaming monitors of 120 pixels per inch (PPI).
Stretchable displays are characterized by their ability to return to their original shape even after being stretched or twisted, representing a technological leap beyond flexible, foldable, and rollable displays. Samsung Display first introduced stretchable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays in 2017.
The company also demonstrated confidence in the OLED sector. During his keynote speech, Samsung Display Vice President Lee Chung said that low power consumption, vivid picture quality, and high portability are essential for displays in the era of artificial intelligence and emphasized that OLED meets these criteria.
Lee cited improvements in OLED technology, including a 30 percent reduction in power consumption, a twofold increase in luminous efficiency, and a 20 percent faster response time. “As a leader in the OLED sector, we are confident in our ability to lead the market in the AI era,” Lee said, citing the company‘s efforts to respond to the demand for extended reality (XR) devices while developing multi-foldable and rollable displays.
For its part, LG Display is also advancing its next-generation display technologies. Although not on display at IMID, LG Display is accelerating its development of stretchable displays and unveiled a 12-inch stretchable prototype with 20 percent stretchability, 100 PPI resolution, and full RGB color capabilities in 2022.
LG Display focused on OLED advancements at the conference, showcasing TV and gaming OLED panels equipped with its Meta Technology 2.0 that won the IMID Display of the Year award., LG Display successfully improved the panels’ brightness by 42 percent with this technology.
LG Display also introduced its new OLED on Silicon (OLEDoS) technology for the first time in Korea. OLEDoS involves the deposition of OLED on silicon wafers, enabling high-quality displays even in small sizes, and the company noted that the newly developed OLEDoS combines OLED elements with Micro-Lens Array (MLA) technology, increasing brightness by 40 percent. The company introduced the industry’s first OLEDoS for smartwatches with Light Field Display (LFD) technology for glasses-free 3D effects, while also unveiling automotive OLEDs with tandem technology that attracted a lot of interest.
