LG Energy Solution leads in global battery management system patents

LG Energy Solution Ltd. has secured the most battery management system (BMS) patents globally, surpassing major battery manufacturers in China and Japan.

A joint analysis by LG Energy Solution and patent search firm WIPS showed that the South Korean company ranks first in BMS patent registrations and applications across Korea, the United States, Europe, China, and Japan.

From 2018 to 2022, LG Energy Solution filed 5,475 patents in these regions.

The analysis was based on patents held by the top 10 battery companies in Korea, China, and Japan, including the top three battery manufacturers in Korea, China‘s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL), and Japan’s Panasonic Corp.

LG Energy Solution‘s BMS-related patents accounted for 40 percent of the 13,500 patents filed by these companies. It holds 1.2 times more patents than Chinese firms and 3.5 times more than Japanese competitors.

A BMS monitors battery conditions to ensure optimal performance, using data on current, voltage, and temperature to detect issues like voltage drops or abnormal degradation during charging and discharge.
