Samsung Electronics Co. cemented its leadership in the global TV market in the first half of 2024, backed by artificial intelligence (AI) TVs released this year.

According to market tracker Omdia on Monday, global TV shipments stood at 48.11 million in the second quarter of 2024, up by about 4 percent from the same period a year ago.

The surge was fueled by the demand for TV upgrades during the Summer Olympics, sources said.

In the first six month of this year, Samsung Electronics accounted for 28.8 percent of the entire global shipments, followed by LG Electronics Inc. with 16.6 percent.

Samsung Electronics is expected to retain its top position in the global TV market for a 19th straight year this year.

In the premium market that involves TVs priced $2,500 and higher, Samsung Electronics accounted for 52.8 percent of the global sales.

In a segment of ultra-large screens that comes in 75 inches and above, Samsung Electronics held a 29.6 percent market share.

LG Electronics maintained its leadership in the OLED TV market, with a 49.4 percent share by value and a 52.6 percent share by volume in the first half of the year.

The company shipped 1.34 million OLED TVs in the first half of the year, slightly up from 1.33 million units in the same period last year.

Chinese rivals, in the meantime, are chasing closely behind.

TCL accounted for 12.1 percent of the global TV sales in the first half of this year, followed by Hisense with 10 percent.
