Protest to preserve 'comfort women' statue in Berlin

The Statue of Peace, unveiled on 28 September 2020, is a memorial for the so-called 'comfort women', a euphemistic term for the girls and women who were sexually enslaved by the Imperial Japanese military forces during World War II. Ever since the statue was erected, it?s been linked to a diplomatic controversy in which the government of Japan had criticized a 'one-sided view'. Berlin governing Mayor Kai Wegner during his visit to Japan in May 2024, declared that a 'one-sided portrayal must no longer take place', which the Korea Association interpreted as an intention to remove the statue from public space.
