South Korean opto-semiconductor company Seoul Semiconductor Co. nabbed the top spot in the global backlight light-emitting diode (LED) market for the first time, ending the long reign of Japan’s Nichia Corp.

Seoul Semiconductor announced on Thursday that it secured a 16.5 percent market share in terms of revenue in the global LED backlight market for 2023, according to data from market research firm Omdia.

Seoul Semiconductor specializes in LED products and optical solutions for lighting, automotive, and display applications. The company holds over 18,000 patents, with products and technologies including the nPola, which is more than 10 times brighter than conventional LEDs, the advanced UV sterilization technology Violeds, the omnidirectional Filament LED, and the natural light LED SunLike.

In the display sector, Seoul Semiconductor offers customized LED solutions for TVs, monitors and automotive applications using its WICOP technology. This technology enables the production of ultra-small, high-efficiency LED components without wires or packaging, and has been adopted in over 100 models by global automakers.

“We invest about 100 billion won ($72.7 million), or 10 percent of our annual sales, in research and development and have secured an overwhelming 18,000 patents in the LED industry,” the company said, adding that it will continue innovating to keep its newly won position.
