Apple TV+'s documentary on Korea's female divers, "The Last of the Sea Women," will be released on Oct. 11, the streaming platform announced Thursday.

The documentary follows a group of haenyeo, a Korean term for matriarchs in Jeju Island who dive underwater to harvest seafood. It "zeros in on their tight-knit friendships, savvy independence and infectious sense of empowerment."

Apple TV+ also announced that the documentary has been invited for a screening at this year's Toronto International Film Festival in September.

"The Last of the Sea Women" is directed by Sue Kim, a Korean American best known for also helming "The Speed Cubers," a documentary on the world's Rubik's Cube-solving record breakers released in 2020.

A24's Head of Documentary Nicole Stott is an executive producer for the documentary, and Malala Yousafzai, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning Pakistani education activist, is one of the show's producers.

"The Last of the Sea Women" joins Apple TV+'s growing list of documentaries and docuseries including the Emmy-nominated “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry" (2021) and the Critics’ Choice Documentary Award-nominated “The Velvet Underground" (2021).
