The recent pattern of sudden, short bursts of rain followed by intense heat in South Korea has led to a surge in demand for versatile weather items in the retail market.

According to industry sources on Tuesday, CU convenience store’s umbrella sales increased by 12 percent from July 1 to 28 compared to the same period last year.

Notably, foldable umbrellas and vinyl umbrellas saw substantial sales growth, with increases of 21.8 percent and 16.9 percent, respectively.

In contrast, sales of traditional long umbrellas grew by only 5.8 percent.

The rising sales of foldable umbrellas are attributed to people seeking quick shelter from sudden downpours, often purchasing umbrellas on the go from convenience stores.

Foldable umbrellas, in particular, are popular for their portability, allowing users to be prepared for both rain and scorching heat.

The central regions of Korea, which experienced frequent sudden rain showers, recorded the highest sales growth for these items.

In addition to umbrellas, convenience stores also saw an unusual 39 percent increase in sock sales during the same period. This rise is due to more people getting caught in unexpected rain and needing dry socks.

Department stores have experienced a surge in weather-wear sales and an increase in related pop-up stores.

From July 12 to 28, Lotte Department Store saw an over 30 percent increase in sales of weather-wear brand Barbour, which specializes in waterproof clothing made from a special material called oil skin.

In response, Lotte has continued to host a series of weather-wear brand pop-ups.

A Rockfish pop-up store opened at Lotte World Mall in Songpa District, southern Seoul, until August 1, and the STICO Kids pop-up, initially held at the main Young Plaza, continued on the third floor of the Incheon branch until July 31.

Hyundai Department Store also reported a 43.5 percent year-on-year increase in sales of rain boots, raincoats, sandals, and slider shoes last month as of July 28.
