Actor Jeong Sun-ah becomes first musical star to join Weverse

Musical actor Jeong Sun-ah, 39, is on the superfan community Weverse, the first in her profession to join the platform largely dominated by K-pop stars and their fans.

"[Jeong's] popularity is expanding home and abroad and she has always actively communicated with fans not only through musicals but also through various broadcasting activities and social media," said her agency, Palm Tree Island, in a statement Thursday. "The response from the public has been very positive, with many fans coming from overseas to see her performances."

The artist also agreed to join "in hopes of forming a global community where online and offline fans become one."

Weverse, operated by K-pop giant HYBE, has over 10 million users worldwide. Artists use it to directly interact with their fans through live videos, chats and posts. Global pop phenomena like Ariana Grande and Conan Gray have joined Weverse this year as well.

Jeong's first Weverse livestream on Wednesday had 3,600 views as of Friday afternoon.

Jeong made her debut in a Korean production of "Rent" in 2002, at the age of 19. Cast as Mimi, a drug-addicted club dancer with AIDS, she shot to local stardom. She continued to make a name for herself through glitzy roles like Glinda in “Wicked” and Amneris in “Aida.” Jeong is currently playing Velma Kelly in the Korean production of "Chicago" at D-cube Arts Center in Guro District, western Seoul.
