Jeongyeon, a member of the K-pop band Twice, has revealed that she has been suffering from Cushing's syndrome due to the side effects of steroid medication.

Recently, Jeongyeon appeared on the YouTube channel "Gambyulsa" where she disclosed the reason for her sudden weight gain. She explained that she gained weight suddenly after taking steroid drugs for a herniated disc in her neck in 2020. Following the treatment, she experienced rapid weight gain due to Cushing's syndrome.

Jeongyeon, who even paused her activities due to health problems, said that she manages her health and weight through continuous treatment, tennis, and surfing. She said, "Since I had to take a break once, I try to keep my mind stable. these days, I am making an effort to find new hobbies, and it gives me strength for my life."

Steroid: Muscle Enhancers and Anti-inflammatory Agents

Steroids are a type of synthetic organic compound used for medical purposes and are categorized based on their function. There are anabolic steroids, which help increase and strengthen muscles, and corticosteroids, which are used to reduce inflammation and allergic reactions.

Corticosteroids are commonly used to treat various diseases, including severe allergies, inflammatory skin conditions, hair loss, rhinitis, and asthma. They are also used for herniated discs, arthritis, muscle pain, conjunctivitis, and dry eyes.

Steroids come in various forms, including injections, oral medications, and ointments. Despite their wide range of uses, they can cause side effects, as seen in Jeongyeon's experience. Potential side effects include increased appetite and weight gain, muscle weakness, decreased calcium absorption, cataracts, weakened immunity, and menstrual irregularities.

Cushing's Syndrome: A Common Side Effect of Excessive Cortisol Production

Cushing's syndrome which Jeongyeon experienced is a well-known side effect of steroid medications. This syndrome occurs when excessive exposure to steroids leads to the overproduction of cortisol. The adrenal glands, part of the body's endocrine system, produce various hormones. When steroids are excessively administered, the adrenal glands produce an abnormally high amount of cortisol. As a result, weight gain can cause the face to become round, and fat accumulates on the back of the neck, shoulders, and abdomen. Meanwhile, muscle strength decreases, bruises form easily, and the skin becomes thin.

To treat Cushing's syndrome, the use of steroids must be stopped. However, abruptly stopping steroids can cause adrenal gland dysfunction and hormone deficiencies. so It is essential to carefully consult with a specialist before discontinuing the medication.

To prevent side effects like Cushing's syndrome, consulting about the dosage and duration of steroid use is crucial. Patients must follow their doctor's treatment instructions regularly while taking the medication and should not stop it abruptly, especially with long-term use.
