Genesis BBQ names ex-Ministop head as new CEO

Genesis BBQ Group, South Korea’s major chicken franchise, announced on Tuesday that it has appointed Shim Kwan-sub, former chief executive officer (CEO) of Ministop, as its new CEO.

Genesis BBQ cited Shim’s extensive experience of over 30 years in the franchise industry as a key reason for his recruitment.

“Shim is a hands-on expert with exceptional knowledge in sales, product development, and strategy within the franchise industry,” the group said. “We believe he is the most suitable leader to enhance BBQ’s brand value and competitiveness.”

Shim, an alumnus of Sungkyunkwan University with a degree in English Language and Literature, began his career at Miwon (now Daesang) in 1992, before moving on to become the head of sales planning and later head of the product division at Ministop, eventually rising to the position of CEO.

His decade-long tenure as CEO at Ministop is expected to bring valuable expertise to Genesis BBQ’s franchise operations, sources said.

With the new appointment, Vice Chairman Yoon Kyung-joo, the brother of Genesis BBQ Chairman Yoon Hong-geun, will step down from his role as CEO.

Key priorities for Shim in his new role will include improving financial performance and managing franchise operations. Genesis BBQ is also focusing on global expansion this year.
